The following picture is a map of the Town of Herman scanned from a Sheboygan County plat book from 1862. Many of the names of the original Lipper Settlers can be found on this map along with other Lipper Settlers.

The map is unfortunately very large. The image that you see on this page is a compressed jpeg made for fast loading. The compression however makes the map difficult to read.

Other versions of the map can be downloaded:

bitmap 640 x 628 pixels (same size) but no compression 1.2 mbytes
bitmap 3638 x 3568 pixels with no compression 12.6 mbytes

It is interesting to compare this map with a more modern one from mapper.acme.com. The scales between the two maps are not the same, but you will quickly see some common features.

On the 1862 map you will see that Herman was divided into 36 sections. These sections are still used today for reasons such as local tax assessment but do not generally appear on maps such as the one from mapper.acme.com.

Common features:

  • The road which runs diagonal through Herman is today Highway 32.

  • Franklin is a very small settlement in sections 19 and 20. It is today still known as Franklin, but it is a little larger.

  • Jetzer's Lake is in section 28 and still exists today.

  • Howard's Grove is in sections 23 and 24 and has grown much larger today.

  • Immanuel Church and Cemetery are today located on the extreme southwestern-most property in section 16. Unfortunately I can not read what is written on this property even on the highest resolution scan of this map.
