Corrections, comments, and questions sent to the email address at the bottom of the page are very welcome. Summary References 10 and 11 form the basis of this short synopsis of the Arnhoelter family. More details are available at each of these web sites. Johann Heinrich Arnhoelter was born September 7 1796 in Solterwesch, Lippe-Detmold, which is near Exter. He married Wilhelmina Winneke on an unknown date in Lippe-Detmold. In 1853, Johann Heinrich and Wilhelmina immigrated to Indiana with the children listed below. A short biography of one of the sons, Johann Heinrich Arnhoelter, Jr., that appeared in "Manufacturing and Mercantile Resources of Indianapolis Indiana" states that the Arnhoelter family landed in New Orleans in 1854, where they traveled on to Indiana. It appears that Wilhelmina died between 1853 and 1857 probably in Indiana. In 1857, Johann Heinrich and four children moved to the Town of Herman, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Later two sons moved back to Indiana. Johann Heinrich Arnhoelter died November 2 1877 in the Town Herman Wisconsin and is buried in the Immanuel Church Cemetery. Details Even though Johann Heinrich Arnhoelter was from Lippe-Detmold, he was not among the original settlers. Rather he came to the Town of Herman 8-9 years after the original settlers. The town from where he came in Lippe-Detmold is a few miles west of Langenholzhausen and he may not have been an "everyday" member of the Langenholzhausen community. However, one may speculate that he had friends, distant relatives, or acquaintances in the Lipper community in the Town of Herman. Perhaps he at first agreed to settle in Indiana because wife, Wilhelma Winneke, had familial connections with a Lipper community there. Upon the death of Wilhelma, he felt more comfortable moving to and living in the Lipper community in the Town of Herman, Wisconsin. In records signed by "Physician H. Reineking," Johann Heinrich's parents in Lippe-Detmold were listed as Otto Arnhoelter and Elisabeth Steinman. The physician was probably Dr. Herman Reineking, who practiced medicine in the Town of Herman during the time that Johann Heinrich would have lived there. No more is known of Johann Heinrich's parents. They would have been born in the mid 1700s and probably died before Johann Heinrich and his family immigrated to America. Johann Heinrich Arnhoelter and Wilhelmina Winneke had these children: 1. Mary Christine Arnhoelter Mary Christine immigrated to Indiana about 1849. She and her husband stayed in Indiana when some of her family moved to Wisconsin in 1857. 2. Christine Wilhelmina Arnhoelter Christine stayed in Indiana when some of her family moved to Wisconsin in 1857. 3. Wilhemina Louise Henrietta Arnhoelter 4. Wilhelmine Henriette Arnhoelter 5. Carl Friederich Arnhoelter, Sr. This family line continues. 6. Johann Heinrich Arnhoelter, Jr. At some point, Johann Heinrich dropped the 'e' from his name and became known as Johann Heinrich Arnholter. Johann Heinrich was a prominent merchant of harnesses and saddles in Indianapolis. Johann Heinrich traveled to the Town of Herman, Wisconsin with his family in 1857 but moved back to Indianapolis at some point. 7. Friederich Wilhelm Arnhoelter Friederick Wilhelm was a prominent merchant of harnesses and saddles in Indianapolis with a separate shop from his brother. References |
