Summary

Some of the following information comes from the 1880 US census. The rest comes reference 3.

Conrad Friederich Arpke is listed as Friederich Conrad Arpke in the Lippe-Detmold lists. He was born May 9 1831 in Eichholz Amt Hohenhausen.

Conrad Frederick went by C. Frederick. He is listed in the 1880 census as coming from Eichholz, Lippe-Detmold.

Shortly after immigrating to the Town of Herman with the rest of his family, Frederick went to Manitowoc to work in a saw mill for four years. He became a master at the saw mill business and returned to the Town of Herman in 1853 where he started his own saw mill near the present day village of Franklin.

Frederick did not have the money to start a saw mill operation. His neighbors offered to help and they traded their efforts for eventually having their logs milled. The neighbors helped create a dam in the river and erect Frederick's first building.

Frederick started a water-powered grist mill business with a partner named Dickoff in 1856 in the village of Franklin.

Frederick is credited with plotting out the village of Franklin in 1856.

On August 8 1855, Frederick married Sophia Uphof, who is on the list of original Lipper Settlers as a child in the Uphof family in entry #13.
