Carl Friederich was born April 4 1836 in Solterwesch Lippe-Detmold, which is near Exter. (His obituary says his birth was on October 26 1836, and his monument at Immanuel Cemetery says his birth was October 26, 1837.)

Carl Friederich immigrated as a child with his parents by ship to New Orleans and further to Indiana in 1853 and 1854. In 1857, he moved to the Town of Herman in Sheboygan County Wisconsin with his father and some of his siblings.

Carl Friederich married Sophie Florentina Reineking on November 20 1861.

On October 24 1861, he bought his father's farm for $350. The farm was located just east of Immanuel Church in the Town of Herman. The farm remained in the family into the 1960s.

Louise Ida had a child out of wedlock named Matilda Arnhoelter on March 6 1887. A tightly held family secret revealed in the 1980s that the suspected father was a Wernecke who was a hired man on the Arnhoelter farm at the time. Matilda Arnhoelter was raised as a sibling amongst her aunts and uncles on the Arnhoelter farm. She married Alvin August Reineking on February 15 1912.

A deeply felt shame persisted for a couple of generations and was only dissipated with the deaths of Louise Ida's grandson and granddaughter (Matilda's son and daughter) in the 1980s. Whether a person today is permissive or not permissive of life styles leading to the birth of children born outside of marriage, it is difficult to imagine the deep-felt shame that came with such an event just over a hundred years ago.
